The days-long search for a Richlands man wanted for attempted murder of a deputy came to an end Friday with his apparent suicide.

Deputies with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office responded to Park West Apartments on Valencia Drive in Jacksonville Friday around 3 p.m. to follow up on information discovered during the search for Jarred Louis Mackey, 43, of Richlands, said Trevor Dunnell, OCSO public information officer.

Members of the OCSO SWAT Team surrounded the apartment building and began announcing their presence at the apartment door, but during those announcements, deputies heard a single gunshot from inside the apartment, Dunnell said.

When deputies entered the apartment, they found Mackey dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Dunnell said. No other people were inside the apartment at the time, which investigators believe belongs to an associate of Mackey.

Multiple agencies have been looking for Mackey since June 9, when a deputy responded to the area of 1945 Pony Farm Road in Jacksonville after receiving a call about a suspicious person. The person, later identified as Mackey, allegedly provided the deputy with a false name, Dunnell said.

As the deputy continued the investigation, Mackey’s true identity was discovered, and he then fled on foot.

During the chase, Mackey is accused of pulling out a handgun and shooting at the deputy, Dunnell said. The deputy was not shot but sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Deputies quickly launched a manhunt, with help from Jacksonville police and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers, in the Southwest area, including Pony Farm Road, Blue Creek Road, Gould Road and Burgaw Highway.

Mackey was a convicted felon and was wanted on an outstanding warrant for manufacturing marijuana. The shooting triggered additional warrants against him that included felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, assault by pointing a gun, two counts of resisting a public officer and assault on a government official.

The investigation remains ongoing, Dunnell said.
