ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Port St. Lucie residents could soon learn more about what happens next with a $24 million settlement paid by former trash collection company Waste Pro.

City council members are scheduled to hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall to discuss potential uses for the settlement funds following a years-long legal dispute between the city and Waste Pro.
The city received the settlement money in April. Since then, questions have lingered about whether residents could receive some of the money back or whether it will be used for city projects.

The settlement stems from a lengthy dispute over Waste Pro’s performance while serving Port St. Lucie customers. During the company’s tenure, many residents reported missed garbage and recycling pickups, prompting widespread complaints and ultimately legal action by the city.

For some homeowners, the settlement money should be returned to the people who paid for the service.
“It should either go back to the residents, give them a refund on our property tax, because the garbage is billed through our property taxes, or they should have the garbage company come out twice a week,” said Port St. Lucie homeowner Paul Monacelli.
City officials have previously said they are gathering information and evaluating options before making any recommendations to council members.
No final decision is expected during Monday night’s meeting. However, residents will have an opportunity to provide public comment and share their opinions on how the money should be used.
