Newly elected Naya Young started her journey on the Tampa City Council.
Councilwoman Naya Young, who represents District 5, was sworn in to her position after winning the recent special election. She called it a “fantastic day.”
“So many wonderful people and so much support all in one room (and the hallway! lol) and all for me. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it, Thank You to everyone who voted for me and believed in the vision I have for our district,” the new Tampa Councilwoman posted on social posted.
Young ran a dynamic political campaign that she said was “dedicated to bringing positive change to the citizens of District 5.” Her District 5 campaign stood for integrity, collaboration, and sustainable progress – and she plans to bring that to the Tampa City Council.
Naya Young received 3,116 total votes (61%) in the District 5 City Council election, according to data provided by the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections.
Naya Young campaigned on youth empowerment and creating “a better Tampa for the next generation,” as well as smart growth, better transportation, more affordable housing, better paying jobs and opportunities for entrepreneurs, and making sure Tampa has strong neighborhoods.
“Congratulations to Naya Young on winning the District 5 City Council seat tonight,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor posted. “And thank you to all the candidates, including Thomas Scott, for your commitment to our community. I know the good work of our late Councilwoman Gwen Henderson will continue for District 5 & all of Tampa. Important work ahead.”
