TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — President Trump and Vice President JD Vance signed the memorandum of understanding involving the conflict in Iran on Sunday. The president spoke about the agreement during a stop in France on Monday.
“The deal is all signed and the strait is already partially opened. As you know, they are doing a little hunting for a couple of mines,” Trump said.
The Hill, owned by WFLA’s parent company Nexstar, reports that an Iranian leader signed the agreement on Monday.
“Essentially, ships are starting to go out now. On Friday, it’ll be completely open,” Trump said.
That reopening will follow an official signing ceremony that is scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.
University of Tampa Economics Professor Abby Hall said it’s likely that crude oil costs will go down.
“If it goes through, we can anticipate, most likely, some relief at the pump. Unfortunately, it’s not likely to come immediately,” Hall said.
The exact terms of the deal have not been publicly released. However, they are expected to be known on Tuesday or Wednesday. Hall said if the plan includes Iran charging shipping fees in the key shipping lane for oil, that may offset some of the potential relief.
“You may have a freer flow but it might be more expensive to ship through the strait,” Hall said.
Most lawmakers are waiting to read the terms of the agreement before publicly going on the record.
After reaching out to every member of the Tampa Bay congressional delegation, two members of congress responded.
Sarasota Rep. Greg Steube said:
“Any agreement with Iran must put America’s national security interests first and ensure that the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism is never allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. The Iranian regime has a long history of deception and hostility toward the United States and our allies. Any sanctions relief or concessions must be tied to verifiable actions.”
Hernando Rep. Gus Bilirakis said:
“President Trump is once again proving that strong, decisive leadership is the only way to restore order and protect our national sovereignty. While the failed status quo allowed bad actors like Iran to act with impunity, President Trump and Secretary Rubio are taking decisive action to secure our interests, neutralize threats, and put American prosperity back on track. It’s time to stop the appeasement and start putting America First again – that is exactly what President Trump is doing.”
