TRAFFIC UPDATE: All I-44 traffic reopened in Missouri and Oklahoma around 6 p.m.

MIAMI, Okla. (OSBI) — On June 16, 2026, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and Miami Police Department requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate an officer-involved shooting.

UPDATE: I-44 reopened about 6 p.m. to all traffic in Missouri and Oklahoma.

The Joplin Police Department notified the Quapaw Nation Marshals Service of a stolen vehicle from Joplin, Missouri. Just after 9:00 a.m., officers located the vehicle at the Downstream Casino and Resort. While attempting to make contact with the vehicle, the adult male driver sped away, leading to a pursuit.

During the pursuit, the Miami Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Miami Nation Police Department assisted.

As the pursuit continued, the male suspect brandished a firearm. Law enforcement also determined an adult female was in the passenger seat of the suspect vehicle.

The male driver ultimately began driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate-44 in Miami.

Law enforcement blocked off traffic, as the male driver stopped his vehicle. He and the female passenger then exited the vehicle.L, as the male suspect again brandished a firearm.

Law enforcement provided the suspect commands; however, he did not comply, leading to an officer-involved shooting.

Both the male and female were pronounced deceased on scene. There were no other injuries during the shooting.

This is still an ongoing investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the OSBI will provide their report to the appropriate prosecutorial authorities for review.
