POMPANO BEACH, Fla.—Dale Holness, a former Broward County commissioner and mayor, had a plea for longtime Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Don’t run for re-election in a majority-minority district, after her seat became a target of Florida Republicans’ redistricting efforts.

In an effort to persuade her to stay out of the race for the state’s safely Democratic 20th Congressional District, Holness said he presented Wasserman Schultz with polling data that suggested she could win the new, GOP-leaning 22nd District, where she has long kept a home. She rejected the idea.
