Tallahassee man indicted on federal gun charge
A Tallahassee man has been indicted in federal court for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, federal prosecutors said June 17.
Willie Harris III, 48, now is set for trial starting July 20 before U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee. If convicted, Harris faces a minimum of 15 years’ imprisonment.
U.S. Attorney Jack Heekin of the Northern District of Florida announced the indictment, which charged Harris with “knowingly possess(ing) a firearm, to wit: a SCCY 9 millimeter caliber pistol, and ammunition, namely Speer, Winchester, and Federal 9 millimeter caliber ammunition.”
Harris had been previously convicted, starting in the late 1990s, on state assault and battery, drug and other charges, the indictment said.
Harris is being represented by the Federal Public Defender’s Office, court dockets show. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith L. Steer.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.
