ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Crews from the St. Lucie County Fire District and the U.S. Coast Guard successfully executed a life-saving offshore rescue of a seriously ill passenger from a cruise ship, just seven miles off the coast.

The St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) said that on Friday, crews from Station 2 collaborated with the U.S. Coast Guard to carry out the critical offshore rescue.

SLCFD said that a passenger aboard a cruise ship, located about 7 miles from the shore, was reported seriously ill.

Thanks to the response of both teams, the individual was safely removed from the ship and transported back to land, per SLCFD.

Officials then took the passenger to a local hospital for further care.
