FORT PIERCE — The 1877 Tallship Elissa, a 3-masted iron barque, sailed out Monday morning from the Port of Fort Pierce, where it had docked over the weekend.
Elissa is part of SAIL250, a global gathering of tall ships meeting in New York City for the July 4th celebration of our nation’s 250 anniversary.
Elissa is on a historic 3-month journey from her homeport in Galveston, Texas. As the oldest ship participating in SAIL250, and one of the oldest actively sailing ships in the world, Elissa will lead the parade of tall ships for this historic gathering.
The Florida Remembered Society captured this photo of Elissa as she departed the Port of Fort Pierce Monday morning at 11 a.m. on an outgoing tide with a southwest breeze filling her sails.
