TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – There’s something to be said about athletes that come back to their hometown to give back, and this weekend, kids in Tallahassee are in for a treat, because not one, not two, not three, but four former Leon County football stand-outs are coming home.
Last year, Lincoln grad Pat Watkins, Florida High product James Coleman, and former Chiles star Amari Gainer teamed up for the first Tallahassee Legends football camp. This year, they’re bringing former Lincoln stand-out BJ Daniels into the fold.
Watkins, Coleman, and Gainer all played at Florida State. Gainer closed out his career at North Carolina, while Daniels shined at South Florida before winning a Super Bowl with Seattle.
“To be able to be a part of that and transfer that down to people that look like us, that come from the same cities, same areas, same churches, hospitals, our families know each other all those different types of environments, it’s a good thing,” said Daniels of putting on the camp with guys he watched play football growing up.
“Seeing the younger guys and watching them grow up, watching Amari, watching BJ, having the chance to play with Coleman, it’s fun and it’s a great time,” added Watkins. “It’s something great that I’m happy I’m a part of, and I’m happy everyone else is a part of.”
To be able to give back is an opportunity these guys don’t take lightly, and for all to come together for this camp is a full circle moment.
“My sons are excited about it. To have the chance to be coached up by a Super Bowl winner is really something not everybody gets a chance to do,” said Coleman. “I remember BJ from way in the day. His dad coached me when I was young. It’s really about showing these young men and women what it’s about.”
“To be able to show people you can go to Chiles, you can go anywhere, you can get a great education and you can also play great football and do whatever you want to do,” added Gainer. “You can be where you’re at, you can be with your guys, grow up together, go to college, and do whatever you want to do.”
The best part? That camp is free for boys and girls ages 6 to 16. They are close to capacity, expecting around 200 kids. For more information on the camp, and how to attend, you can click here.
