Lightning-sparked brush fire burns 15 acres in Palm City, now fully contained

PALM CITY, Fla. (CBS12) — A fast-moving brush fire sparked by a suspected lightning strike scorched 15 acres in Palm City on Friday, sending firefighters racing to contain the flames.

The fire started shortly after 4 p.m. near Southwest Martin Highway and Southwest 78th Avenue in an area of dense vegetation, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.

MCFR crews responded alongside the Florida Forest Service and quickly established plow lines around the fire to prevent it from spreading.

Officials said the blaze burned approximately 15 acres before crews brought it under control. No injuries were reported, and no homes or other structures were threatened by the fire.

The fire is now fully contained, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.

The Florida Forest Service will continue monitoring the area in case of any flare-ups or reignition.

Preliminary reports indicate lightning may have sparked the fire.
