Crews continued making progress Friday against two grass fires burning in west Miami-Dade, even as a large smoke column became visible across surrounding communities during the day’s firefighting operations.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) and the Florida Forest Service (FFS) reported that the Quarry 2 Fire has grown to 17,600 acres but is now 80 percent contained. The Well Fire has reached 1,425 acres and is 60 percent contained.
Officials said the increased smoke production seen Friday was intentional as crews took advantage of favorable weather conditions to help push containment efforts, and the smoke column was a normal byproduct of those operations.

Florida’s Turnpike southbound lanes were temporarily shut down between Okeechobee Road and NW 41 Street during the day. Two lanes have reopened as of Saturday morning.
Overnight, smoke is expected to settle lower to the ground as weather conditions change. Communities including Doral, Medley, Sweetwater, and surrounding areas could experience periods of heavier smoke depending on wind shifts.
Residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activity, keep doors and windows closed, and set A/C systems to recirculate indoor air. Those with respiratory conditions, older adults, and young children should take extra precautions.
