FORT PIERCE – A 36-year-old Hobe Sound man was killed on June 17 when he was struck by a car at U.S. 1 near North 3rd Street in Fort Pierce, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.
A 2020 silver Toyota Prius, driven by a 60-year-old Vero Beach man, was headed north on U.S. 1 at about 11:57 p.m., June 17, when he hit a man, who was walking south in the northbound outside lane of U.S. 1, approaching North 3rd Street, according to FHP reports.
The pedestrian was thrown onto the car’s hood into the windshield before rolling off onto the pavement, according to FHP reports.
When the Toyota stopped, a second vehicle drove over the top of the pedestrian’s legs and continued north, according to FHP reports.
The pedestrian was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where he was pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m., according to FHP reports.
The Toyota driver was not injured in the accident, according to FHP reports.
FHP has not released the name of the pedestrian, pending notification of next of kin.
That section of road was shut down for a brief period but was re-opened.
The accident remains under investigation by FHP.
