TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – People all across the country are celebrating Juneteenth, a day marking the end of slavery in the U.S., and one local organization is reminding the community of freedom, resilience and unity.
Friday was the first-ever Juneteenth Award Show, put on by the Capital City Cultural Community Outreach at Florida A&M University. There were nominees from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office to local organizations and churches.
It celebrated black history and honored leaders in our community, including Sheriff Walt McNeil, who won the lifetime achievement award.
Alan Speed, Chief Operating Officer of the organization, said it meant a lot to bring the community together.
Capital City Cultural Community Outreach also hosted its 6th annual Juneteenth Empowerment Festival Saturday afternoon, drawing many to Cascades Park to support local businesses and learn more about black history.
One attendee said having events like this really makes a difference. There were food trucks, free books for children, local historians, music and much more to honor the holiday.
