HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (CBs12) — Florida deputies stormed a barricaded bedroom to rescue a 7-year-old boy from a knife-wielding suspect, leading to a deputy-involved shooting that ended the armed man’s life.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) released bodycam footage following a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday.

HCSO said that at around 2:04 p.m., deputies were called to a domestic violence incident involving a 27-year-old suspect named Mario Camacho.

According to deputies, the caller reported that Camacho was armed with a knife and was choking a 7-year-old boy.

The bodycam video shows that Camacho had barricaded himself in a back bedroom with the child.

Deputies reported being able to hear the child screaming for help and kicking down the door to rescue the boy. Inside the room, they found Camacho, who was holding a knife and refusing to release the child.

He was wearing a motorcycle helmet and two tactical vests equipped with ballistic plates, per HCSO. After multiple commands to drop the knife, a deputy fired at Camacho, ultimately saving the boy.

Camacho was transported to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.

HCSO said that the deputy involved in the shooting, Antonio Gonzalez, who is 25 years old, has been with the HCSO for nearly six years. He has spent five years as a Detention Deputy and the last 11 months as a Law Enforcement Deputy.

As part of standard procedures, Deputy Gonzalez has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is ongoing.
