TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee nonprofit that provides food assistance to hundreds of families each month is expanding its services to include affordable clothing and household goods.
Victory House Community Resource Center is soft launching “Clothed With Love,” a thrift store created in response to a community needs assessment conducted in the 32317 ZIP code.
President Lanorris McFadden said the assessment revealed that many residents in the area struggle to afford clothing.
“It’s often associated with wealth because we have a lot of wealthy neighbors around us, but what people don’t see is the grandmother raising the grandchildren nestled in the midst of this,” McFadden said. “People don’t see the poverty that’s in the midst of this.”
The store will offer clothing and shoes for men, women and children, as well as furniture and household items. Victory House is accepting donations of gently used items ahead of the store’s grand opening Aug. 7.
The thrift store expands on the organization’s existing services. Victory House serves about 500 families each month through its food program, Winners Market. It’s a grocery store-style distribution center that allows families to select their own food items.
McFadden said the model was designed to provide families with dignity and choice.
“I just noticed the feeling people would get in that moment and thought there’s got to be a way that these people understand that they are valued,” he said
McFadden, who also serves as pastor of Shady Grove No. 1 Primitive Baptist Church, said the church’s ministry helps identify unmet needs in the community.
