MAITLAND, Fla. — Orange County Public Works started construction Monday to rebuild a section of North Wymore Road that was swallowed by a large sinkhole on May 15, according to the city of Maitland.
Crews have worked for weeks to stabilize the surrounding ground in the area north of Hope Road in Maitland.
Engineers drilled deep holes to test soil compactness and then pumped concrete grout 90 feet deep into those holes to add even more support. The concrete also replaced some of the soil that washed away when the 20-foot-wide sinkhole formed.
Following several days of geotechnical engineers evaluating the sinkhole and surrounding ground, Maitland officials turned the site over to Orange County Public Works to repair the roadway.
Crews brought in heavy machinery and large piles of road base material near the former sinkhole site.
Approximately 150 linear feet of the roadway is expected to be rebuilt, officials said. A timeframe for reopening Wymore Road is dependent on forecasted storms later this week.
