TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – City of Tallahassee leaders, family and former students celebrated a street designation for Maggie Lewis-Butler on Monday.
The City of Tallahassee Commission voted in April to honor her by designating part of Jim Lee Road.
Butler served Leon County Schools for 30 years, teaching science and adult education courses, according to the City of Tallahassee meeting agenda. She also was an adjunct professor in biology at Florida A&M University.
Lewis-Butler also served on the Leon County School Board for 22 years. According to the City, at the time of her retirement, she was the longest-serving school board member.

“Throughout her tenure, she was widely known for her advocacy on behalf of students, particularly children and families on the south side of Tallahassee, and for her commitment to fairness, equal opportunity and improving school facilities across the district,” the agenda item read.
Jim Lee Road from E. Magnolia Drive to Saddle Creek Run will be known as Maggie B. Lewis-Butler Honorary Roadway.
“Known for her compassion, tenacity and tireless work ethic, Maggie Lewis-Butler is widely respected for her lifelong commitment to education, public service and the betterment of the Tallahassee and Leon County community,” the agenda item read.
