Florida Civil Rights Museum inviting Big Bend kids to take part in ‘Live the Dream’ event

  • June 23, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee-based Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc., is bringing its ‘Live the Dream’ event to the Big Bend this week.

The second-ever youth excursion will take place on Friday at the Turnbull Center. The museum says spots are still open for 6th through 12th graders to register.

After a successful event last year in Central Florida, the group’s Co-Executive Director, Delaitre Hollinger, can’t wait to bring it home.

“Our students last year said they had never, ever seen anything like it,” Hollinger said.

The event is the brainchild of the museum’s other executive director, Jacqueline Perkins. The day is all about immersion. Students will rotate through interactive experience rooms and take part in leadership development workshops on topics that range from financial literacy to artificial intelligence.

More news out of the Big Bend:

A leadership luncheon breaks up the networking, headlined this year by State Rep. Gallop Franklin.

Hollinger said it’s vital that youth learn about the world around them.

“Everything that I try to do, not just with the museum, but in the community, it’s always with a young person in mind,” he said.

“A young person who will be inspired and who will go on to do great things themselves.”

Limited spaces are still available for the Friday, June 26 session, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is free to attend, but parents need to register. Only students who have completed the sixth grade or older are welcome.

Hollinger asks every parent to register by Wednesday, June 24.
