Cleveland-based Orlando says it’s actively hiring as more than 700 Schwebel’s employees face layoffs later this summer.

CLEVELAND — Less than a week after Schwebel’s announced that it was shutting down operations later this summer, Cleveland-based Orlando Baking Company says it is “encouraging affected employees to explore immediate career opportunities with the company.”

In a release sent out Monday, Orlando announced that it is “actively hiring experienced professionals for positions in production, maintenance, sanitation, warehouse operations, and leadership at its Cleveland-area facilities.”

“The closure of Schwebel’s marks the end of an important chapter in Ohio’s baking industry,” Orlando Baking Company leadership said in a statement. “For many dedicated employees, this transition was unexpected. We want them to know there are opportunities available at Orlando Baking Company, where their experience, skills, and commitment to quality will be valued.”

On June 17, Schwebel’s announced that it will “wind down its operations in an orderly fashion” following the Fourth of July weekend “and expects to initiate a liquidation of its business.” The company, which was founded in 1906, has dealt with financial troubles for years, and though it tried to find someone willing to buy the business and keep it running, CEO Steve Cooper said a deal could not be reached.

Orlando says it “recognizes the significant contributions Schwebel’s employees have made to the baking industry and the communities they have served throughout Ohio,” adding that many of the “skills and experiences” developed in everything from bakery manufacturing to sanitation and maintenance “align closely” with Orlando’s operations, creating immediate opportunities for qualified candidates.

Schwebel’s employs more than 700 people, according to the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition. In its WARN letter to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Schwebel’s said it expects layoffs to begin the week of July 6 and proceed through the Labor Day weekend. Bakeries in Youngstown and Hebron will fall silent, along with its many outlet stores across the region, including locations in Strongsville, Valley View, Mentor and North Canton.
