AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A Florida man was arrested after authorities said he attempted to deliver contraband near Washington State Prison before fleeing from law enforcement officers.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 5:35 a.m. on June 22 to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked near the perimeter of the prison.
When officers approached, the suspect allegedly fled on foot and was later located near Burden Street.
Following the arrest, K-9 Rebel helped locate contraband that authorities said had been discarded during the chase.
The suspect, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, faces multiple charges, including two counts of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, four counts of items prohibited to inmates, trading with inmates, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and two counts of obstruction.
Authorities said the suspect’s vehicle was impounded and transported to the Washington County Law Enforcement Center as part of the ongoing investigation.
