The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released the body camera video of the three deputies who were involved in an officer-involved shooting in early June.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released new information regarding an officer-involved shooting in the Southside Estates area.

A little before 6 p.m. on  June 7, JSO says that officers responded to a home on Kline Road East regarding an armed domestic dispute. The callers reported that their grandchild 22-year-old Kiyan Atkinson, who lived in a shed on the property, had pointed a gun at the grandfather.

Upon arriving on the scene, the sheriff’s office says that officers made contact with Atkinson in the backyard for several minutes, but he refused to comply with their demands.

JSO says that during their initial encounter, Atkinson had kept his hand inside his jacket pocket.

At one point during the encounter, the officer’s body camera shows that Atkinson had left the area of the shed and began walking towards the street, to which officers followed. Officers asked Atkinson to get on the ground one final time before JSO Officer Kernodle discharged his taser.

Further video shows Atkinson pulling a firearm from his hoodie after being hit by the taser. Seeing the firearm, the other two officers on scene, JSO Officer Iezzi and Lenn, opened fire, shooting Atkinson multiple times. 

JSO says that as officers were attempting to detain him, Atkinson reached for his firearm, but was unsuccessful. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The sheriff’s office says that Atkinson was arrested for aggravated assault on a person 65 years of age or older and three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. At the time of publishing, Atkinson remains in stable condition and once released, he will be transported to the Duval County Jail.

The State Attorney’s Office will review the incident to determine the legality of the shooting while the sheriff’s office conducts an internal review.
