Last week, we shared with readers what Florida contributed to anational time capsule that will be dug up 250 years from now.
The official items included: four challenge coins, a note from the Florida speaker of the House; a state Senate session booklet; and a booklet from the group in charge of Florida’s semiquincentennial celebrations.
It’s safe to say our readers weren’t impressed. They sent in some colorful comments about the contributions — “What a failure of imagination,” said L. Humphers — and suggestions of what could have been included instead.
Florida’s rich wildlife was a strong theme across proposals: pictures and information about manatees, whale sharks, flamingoes, dolphins, roseate spoonbills, groupers and Florida panthers.
“They would have to be labeled because they probably won’t exist 250 years from now,” said P. Harvey.
Another reader suggested shark teeth from Venice or a toy alligator.
Some suggested gifting future generations the recipe for lime pie. Instructions for shrimp grits, sweet potato pie and Joe’s Stone Crab mustard sauce were also proposed.
Speaking of, one reader advocated for menus from some of Florida’s iconic restaurants, such as the Columbia Restaurant, to be included.
Also popular among readers’ submissions were snapshots of Florida’s geography and ecology in 2026. A seashell or sugar sand from the Panhandle. Seeds from native plants. A satellite view of the state or a chart of weather patterns. Something that gives a nod to the Everglades.
Another idea: a brochure of Disney World in Orlando. But hopefully Mickey Mouse will still be around in 2276.
