Florida Memorial University has officially named Brian A. Snell as its new Director of University Bands, ushering in a new chapter for the institution’s acclaimed music program following the passing of longtime band director Dr. Richard Beckford. The appointment comes during a period of reflection and renewal for the South Florida HBCU as it seeks to honor Beckford’s enduring legacy while continuing the growth of its celebrated marching band tradition.

Snell, an accomplished music educator and band leader, assumes the role with the responsibility of building upon the foundation established by Beckford, whose impact on Florida Memorial students, musicians, and the broader HBCU band community will be felt for generations. University leaders expressed confidence that Snell’s experience, vision, and commitment to student success will help guide the program forward while preserving the culture of excellence Beckford worked tirelessly to cultivate.

Since arriving at Florida Memorial in 2020, Snell has served as Associate Director of Bands and Director of Operations. During that time, he played an instrumental role in helping build the university’s ROAR Marching Band alongside Beckford. Together, they transformed the program into one of the most recognized and respected bands in HBCU culture.

Under Beckford’s leadership, the ROAR Marching Band earned ESPN’s inaugural Band of the Year honor and gained international recognition through performances in France. The band’s rise helped elevate Florida Memorial’s profile on a national stage while creating opportunities for student musicians to showcase their talents around the world.

According to Florida Memorial University President William C. McCormick Jr., Snell’s appointment reflects the institution’s continued investment in the arts and its commitment to enhancing the student experience.

“His work has elevated the visibility of Florida Memorial University while creating meaningful, transformative experiences for our students,” McCormick said. “We are confident that under his leadership, the band program will continue to thrive and set new standards of excellence.”

Snell acknowledged both the significance of the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with following one of the most influential band directors in the university’s history.

“I am committed to continuing the legacy built at FMU on the heels of Dr. Beckford, a pillar of this program,” Snell said. “The ROAR will be heard, and it will be felt.”

Joining Snell in his new role is veteran music educator Charles Moorer, who brings more than 16 years of experience leading music programs. Moorer’s impressive résumé includes performances at Carnegie Hall, the Grammy Awards, and multiple Super Bowls, adding another accomplished voice to Florida Memorial’s music leadership team.

While the loss of Dr. Beckford continues to be felt throughout the FMU community, the appointment of Snell signals a commitment to carrying forward the vision he helped create.
