While Florida posted the highest increase in fatal road rage encounters, Colorado had the highest number of those wrecks with 130.
There are apparent anger issues on the roads in Florida.
A new study by Grigor Law Injury & Car Accident Lawyers found a huge jump in Florida’s road rage incidents pushing the Sunshine State into the second most dangerous state when it comes to angry confrontations on highways. The study looked at data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration between 2020 and 2024 and found Floridians have some serious issues with controlling tempers while traveling in autos.
“Florida recorded the nation’s second-largest year-over-year increase in fatal road rage crashes: Fatal crashes involving road rage jumped from 12 in 2023 to 36 in 2024, a 200% increase,” the analysis concluded.
Only Wyoming topped Florida for fatal road rage incident increases. That state saw a 300% jump in fatal road rage crashes between 2023 and 2024. But the raw numbers weren’t close to Florida as Wyoming increased from one fatal anger-related accident to four the next year.
Texas was just behind Florida in third on the list with an 83.33% increase in road rage fatalities going from six in 2023 to 11 in 2024.
There were other states in the top 10 for fatal road rage incidents that didn’t see the percentage of those fatal encounters go up that much. But the FARS raw numbers of anger-related road fatalities were substantially higher than the Sunshine State.
Alabama came in seventh on the list and had a 27.03% jump in fatal accidents involving road rage from 2023 to 2024. But that saw the figures increase from 74 to 94 fatalities due to anger-related issues.
Colorado came in eighth with an 8.33 increase in road rage fatalities but far surpassed any other state with 120 of the incidents in 2023 jumping to 130 in 2024.
South Carolina also had a high number of road rage fatalities. South Carolina saw only a 1.82% increase in fatal road rage wrecks between 2023 to 2024 but recorded 55 of the crashes jumping to 56 in 2024.
