GENEVA, Fla. – A woman is dead after being bitten by an alligator on the Econlockhatchee River, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Officials say it happened near the Barr Street Trailhead in the Little Big Econ State Forest in Seminole County around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

FWC says the woman was sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

She later died.

Multiple agencies including the Seminole County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office are on scene, along with FWC.

Officials say a nuisance alligator trapper was called to the scene as well.

FWC says this is an active and on-going investigation.

Officials want to remind the public that while serious alligator injuries are rare, FWC’s Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program removes alligators that pose a danger to people, pets or property.

FWC’s toll-free nuisance alligator hotline is 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
