What makes Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park special isn’t just its beaches, wildlife or the historic lighthouse. It is the simple fact that this remarkable place exists at all. More than 60 years ago, journalist and civic advocate William Calhoun Baggs rallied citizens, challenged politicians and residents and helped save the southern tip of Key Biscayne from development. Because people cared enough, we inherited a park that offers us the luxury of being surrounded by nature.
Today, that same spirit of stewardship is needed again. Friends of Cape Florida is inviting residents of all ages and abilities to join our Fourth of July Parade group and proudly celebrate the “Park in Our Backyard.” We’ll march together carrying signs, sharing fun facts about Bill Baggs and the park, handing out fans to cool the spectators and reminding our community that parks thrive when people show up.
The commitment is about an hour and a half. We offer community service hours, a Friends of Cape Florida T-shirt and hat, a snack and a great feeling of proudly presenting Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park together. Whether you’re a longtime supporter, a new resident, a student looking for volunteer hours or simply someone who loves the park, we’d love to have you with us.
Bill Baggs showed us that civic engagement works. Let’s honor his legacy in the spirit of the 250th anniversary of our nation by joining the parade and helping ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy this extraordinary park just minutes from our doorsteps.
