St. Petersburg, FL – A lengthy investigation into missing store inventory resulted in the arrest of a St. Petersburg woman accused of stealing more than $72,000 worth of cigarettes from her employer, according to police.
The St. Petersburg Police Department said the 33-year-old woman allegedly removed cartons of cigarettes from a local convenience store over several months while working as an employee.
Investigators launched an inquiry after store management identified repeated inventory shortages during routine audits and determined the losses were significantly higher than expected.
According to the suspect’s arrest report, detectives reviewed surveillance footage, inventory records and other evidence before identifying the employee as the primary suspect.
Police allege she repeatedly took cartons of cigarettes without paying for them and later sold the merchandise to other convenience stores for financial gain.
Authorities estimate the total value of the stolen cigarettes exceeded $72,000. Investigators said the alleged thefts occurred over an extended period before the suspect was taken into custody.
Police have not identified the businesses that allegedly purchased the stolen products, and it remains unclear whether those businesses knew the merchandise had been stolen.
The woman was arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail on a charge of grand theft. Authorities said the investigation remains active, and additional charges or arrests could be possible as detectives continue reviewing evidence related to the case.
Police have not announced whether any of the stolen cigarettes have been recovered.
