Tampa, FL – Tampa officials have opened public cooling centers as dangerous temperatures and high humidity continue to create hazardous conditions across the region.
The City of Tampa announced that several air-conditioned facilities will be available to residents seeking relief from the heat as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and heat index values approach or exceed 110 degrees.
Officials said the cooling centers are intended to provide a safe environment for anyone affected by the prolonged heat, especially older adults, young children, people with underlying health conditions, and residents without access to reliable air conditioning.
The designated cooling centers include community centers located throughout the city and will operate during scheduled daytime hours while the excessive heat persists. Residents are encouraged to verify operating hours before traveling to a location.
Emergency management and public health officials are urging people to take precautions as the heat wave continues.
Recommendations include drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, and spending time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
Officials also encourage residents to check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Pet owners are advised to provide animals with fresh water and shade and to avoid leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can rise rapidly.
Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, conditions that may require immediate medical attention.
City officials said they will continue monitoring weather conditions and determine whether additional cooling center operations are needed if the dangerous heat continues.
