MAITLAND, Fla. — North Wymore Road reopened Thursday after crews spent weeks filling in and repairing a sinkhole that opened up on May 15.
One lane was open early Thursday afternoon, and crews were working to open up the rest of the road later in the day, a spokesperson for Orange County Public Works said.
County crews repaved about 1,100 linear feet of Wymore Road between Hope Road and Brightwater Circle on Wednesday, and they were painting the road Thursday with the goal of removing all barriers in time for the Fourth of July weekend.
Originally, the county expected to repave about 150 linear feet of roadway, but officials decided to have crews work on the 1,100 feet to better address other areas of worn asphalt, Public Works spokesperson Darrell Moody said.
Wymore has been closed to the south at Hope Road and to the north at Oranole Road, and motorists, as well as residents of the Maitland Club neighborhood, have had to take Maitland Avenue to head east.
Weeks of work were required to ensure the hole had stopped growing and to stabilize the ground around. The county contracted with engineers to dig holes deep in the ground to test soil compactness and then filled them with concrete to add more support. Then Orange County Public Works dug out and refilled the new road base beforw it was repaved.
