ORLANDO, Fla. (WWSB) – The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has released a disturbing body camera video of three deputies shooting a woman who refused to drop a knife outside of her home.
The sheriff’s office says it posted a six-minute video on social media July 2 in it’s commitment to transparency and to give the public the “full context” of the incident, “rather than rely on short snippets they may see elsewhere,” the post on the social media site X said.
“The video is being released pursuant to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Release of Video Recordings in Critical Incidents policy,” it said.
On June 3 at about 1 p.m., deputies responded to a home in the Dr. Phillips area of Orlando after a neighbor reported there was a woman screaming outside of a home.
When deputies arrived, they knocked on the door of the residence, and 59-year-old Rosalia Hodges came out, holding a knife.
Deputies retreated back toward the street and ordered her to drop the knife several times.
She refused to drop the knife and shouted “I’ll kill you” as she continued to advance.
Three deputies fired their weapons multiple times, hitting Hodges, who fell to the sidewalk. Deputies rendered aid until paramedics arrived. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputies who fired their weapons are on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.
