ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Bomb Squad safely detonated an explosive device underground in St. Petersburg after determining it was too unstable to be transported.
According to the St. Pete Police Department, after a homeowner passed away, an explosive device was found in the home’s garage at 7201 8th Street North.
The Tampa Bomb Squad responded and determined it was too unstable to transport.
To render the device safe, the bomb squad buried it in the house’s backyard and detonated it underground Thursday afternoon, SPPD said.
After the device detonated, police said it proceeded to burn safely underground. Officers said it will take around an hour for the device to burn itself out.
The house was on a dead-end road, and the closest mobile homes at a nearby mobile home park were evacuated until after the detonation.
No injuries or damage were reported. Officers will remain on the scene until it is completely clear.
