This Fourth of July, Key Biscayne residents are being asked to think twice before tossing their holiday flags and garlands in the trash. A community resiliency effort led by A Zero Waste Culture, the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne and Flying High for Haiti is collecting used flags and garlands to give them a second life.
The idea is simple: collect, reuse, fly. After the Fourth, residents save their flags and garlands, the partner groups turn them into kite kits, and families later build and fly the kites together at a future community event.
On July 4, members of these organizations will have a tent at the end of the parade route for residents to drop off the flags and garlands there
Residents can also drop off flags and garlands, only flags and garlands, please, at a Zero Waste Culture tent from 9 a.m.-noon, on Saturdays.
“From a celebration to a community moment,” organizers say. “Together, we fly higher.”
