FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — One person was killed and three others were injured after a lightning strike in Florida on Friday.
The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District said crews responded to a lightning strike near the Island Winds Condominiums involving multiple people. When firefighters arrived, they found one person unresponsive and two others who required transportation to a hospital.

Fire officials said a bystander retrieved an automated external defibrillator (AED) and began CPR before crews arrived. Despite those efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“To our residents and visitors, please stay aware of the weather and the environment. You should immediately seek shelter when you hear thunder or see lightning. Please keep yourself and your family safe,” the fire district said.
To keep yourself safe during thunder and lightning storms the fire district advises that if your outdoors:
If you can hear thunder and lightning, seek shelter inside a home, large building, or a hard-topped vehicle. Do not go under a tree for shelter. No place outside is safe during a thunderstorm. Wait 30 minutes after hearing the clap of thunder. Places with only a roof on sports fields, gold courses, picnic areas are not safe during lightning storms. Small sheds also shouldn’t be used. If a person is struck by lighting, the fire district says to call 911.
