To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our nation, Charlotte County will light four county facilities with red, white and blue lights for the month of July.
The four locations are:
Historical Courthouse, 226 Taylor St., in Punta Gorda
Family Services Center, 21500 Gibralter Ave., in Port Charlotte
Charlotte County Administration Center, 18500 Murdock Circle in Port Charlotte
Mac V. Horton West County Annex, 6868 San Casa Drive in Englewood
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we don’t often get a chance to reflect on the choices our forefathers made and the chances they took to put the 13 colonies of Great Britain on a path to nationhood. In the words of the declaration, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
Today, I join with my fellow citizens in celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation’s birth and pledge to do my part to fulfill the lofty principles espoused by the Founders.

Burn ban
There has been much discussion online and in person about the use of fireworks to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday because the burn ban was not lifted two weeks ago after a series of brush fires and the ongoing drought.
At a special meeting Thursday, the County Commission voted to postpone lifting the burn ban due to ongoing risks in many areas of the county.
The ban does include a prohibition on lighting off fireworks and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is tasked with enforcing it.
