FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — One person was killed and three others were hospitalized Friday afternoon after a lightning strike on Fort Myers Beach.
Crews were dispatched to the area of Estero Boulevard, where they found one person unresponsive. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said at least three others were transported for medical evaluation.
Fort Myers Beach Fire District said a bystander was performing CPR when crews arrived. However, due to the injuries, efforts were unsuccessful.
Authorities are urging people to monitor the weather prior to going outside.
“If you observe lightning in the immediate area: stay out of the water, seek immediate shelter, and stay clear of loose or tall objects that could pose a risk or injury,” Sheriff Marceno wrote in a social media post.
The Town of Fort Myers Beach also released a statement, extending its thoughts and prayers to the families affected.
