One man is dead and three family members injured after a lightning strike at Fort Myers Beach, Florida, over the Fourth of July weekend.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased victim as 51-year-old Viktar Kiryk.
The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District said in a statement, per NBC News, that crews were dispatched Friday to the scene of a lightning strike involving multiple people.
According to the report, officials found one individual unresponsive, the fire department said. Three others had to be transported from the scene.
“To our residents and visitors, please stay aware of the weather and the environment,” the fire department said. “You should immediately seek shelter when you hear thunder or see lightning.”
“Please keep yourself and your family safe. ‘When thunder roars, go indoors,’” the fire department added.
The four victims were in the ocean when the lightning struck, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
A bystander was performing CPR, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the three other victims were members of Kiryk’s family and are in stable condition.
A beachgoer said multiple people immediately stepped in to help before paramedics arrived.
“I went running up the beach. He was lying near the water. There was already a paramedic doing CPR. There was already a nurse doing CPR. They had the AED connected, but he did not have a shockable rhythm, so you just keep doing CPR. We kept making sure that his head was turned to the side, and we just kept doing CPR until paramedics came,” the witness told WINK.
