Fort Lauderdale, FL – A construction crane collapsed at a Fort Lauderdale job site Thursday evening, prompting an emergency response and an investigation by local and federal officials into what caused the incident.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded shortly after 6 p.m. to the construction site at 840 Federal Highway, where the new YMCA facility is being built.
Officials said the crane’s boom fell onto the partially completed structure, but no workers or bystanders were injured.
Emergency crews secured the scene and temporarily closed one lane of Federal Highway while they evaluated the area and ensured there were no additional hazards.
Fire rescue personnel confirmed the crane truck remained upright even though the boom had collapsed onto the building.
A city building inspector was called to the site to assess the damage, while investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are leading the investigation into what caused the collapse.
Officials have not determined whether equipment failure, human error or another factor contributed to the incident.
Authorities have not released an estimate of the damage to the building, and no enforcement actions or safety violations have been announced as of Friday.
Investigators are expected to examine the crane, construction equipment and surrounding work area as part of the ongoing review.
The project remained under investigation as officials worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
