The Miami Heat’s summer program stands as somewhat of an open tryout for a roster depleted in the backcourt by the blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

With Tyler Herro, Kasparas Jakucionis and Jaime Jaquez Jr. moved out in that deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, and with the transaction leaving the Heat unable to match the Chicago Bulls’ offer for Norman Powell in free agency, opportunity should be there in Erik Spoelstra’s backcourt.

Yes, Tim Hardaway Jr. was added on the free-agent contract that will be finalized at Monday’s start of the NBA’s 2026-27 salary-cap calendar, but more could be needed alongside Davion Mitchell and Dru Smith.

Seemingly, message received from Heat summer-league guards Ryan Conwell, Jahmir Young, Trevor Keels and Ted Donaldson, all of whom certainly haven’t been bashful, including in Sunday’s 93-91 California Classic sudden-death double-overtime loss to the summer roster of the Los Angeles Lakers at Chase Center in San Francisco.

While Conwell is under contract after being selected at No. 37 in the second round of last week’s NBA draft Keels and Young are with the Heat at summer league without guarantees. Donaldson holds a Heat two-way contract.

Conwell certainly wasn’t reluctant, as was the case with his shooting at Louisville, closing with 16 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Keels scored 16 on 5-of-15 shooting, Young 14 on 5 of 13 and Donaldson 11, a Heat backcourt exception in this one, at 4 of 4 from the field.

The Heat summer roster, guided by Spoelstra assistant Wayne Ellington, also got four blocked shots and six rebounds from returning center Vlad Goldin, who also missed two free throws late in the two-minute overtime.

Summer-league games are decided by sudden death in the second overtime, with the Heat losing on a Lakers putback basket.

Five Degrees of Heat from Sunday’s game:

1. For starters: The Heat opened with a lineup of Goldin, Conwell, Young, Keels and J’Vonne Hadley, the undrafted guard out of Louisville.

Among those in the Lakers’ starting lineup was first-round pick Cameron Carr.

First off the Heat bench was Donaldson, the undrafted guard out of the University of Miami, who had four assists Sunday.

Among those who saw action for the Heat after being held out of the California Classic-opening victory Friday night over the summer roster of the Spurs were Kansas forward Tre White, USC big man Ezra Ausar and LSU guard Cam Carter, all of whom went undrafted last week.

2. Conwell 2.0: After closing with 21 points on Friday night in the victory over the Spurs, Conwell came out shooting.

The guard out of Louisville opened the scoring by converting a contested 3-pointer and was not shy from there, missing his next eight 3-point attempts, before getting a fortuitous bounce to convert his 10th attempt.

He closed 2 of 12 on 3-pointers, also with six rebounds and three assists.

3. Goldin’s goal: With a qualifying offer in place to return on a two-way contract, Goldin made solid use of his 7-foot frame, anchoring the middle of the Heat defense.

With Kel’el Ware also sent out to the Bucks in the Antetokounmpo trade, Golden arguably stands as the lone true center in the Heat mix at the moment.

While the former FAU Final Four center closed with nine fouls, the limit in the 40-minute summer-league games is 10.

4. No Gardner: The Heat were without returning guard Myron Gardner, who left Friday night’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs’ summer roster early because of an ankle sprain.

While the Heat are more than familiar with Gardner’s game, the lack of wings on the Heat’s current roster could open additional playing time this season, which make summer league somewhat of a showcase for the wing who opened last season on a Heat two-way contract.

Gardner has a $500,000 guarantee in place for his minimum-scale salary for the coming season.

5. Up next: The Heat complete their three-game California Classic schedule at 10 p.m. Monday back at Chase Center against the summer roster of the host Golden State Warriors.

From there, the Heat get a three-day break before opening their Las Vegas NBA Summer League schedule Friday against the Milwaukee Bucks. That will be one of at least five games on the UNLV campus for Ellington’s roster.
