Land is now being cleared along the northeast corner of Thomasville and Velda Dairy roads to make way for the coming of the Northside Shoppes.

In a Facebook post from Ghazvini Development, they share how “the wait is over” as they are “officially breaking ground.”

“This exciting new retail development will feature 7 brand-new buildings and bring an incredible mix of shopping, dining, and services to one of Tallahassee’s busiest corridors,” the post says.

“While we’re not quite ready to reveal our tenant lineup, we can promise the community will be thrilled with the well-known, popular brands coming soon! Stay tuned for exciting announcements as construction progresses,” the post continues.

While Premier Commercial Group has been tight lipped about the new northern attraction, the Tallahassee Democrat has previously reported that a new 100,000 square-foot self-storage facility will be built on the land purchased by Doran Companies, one of Minnesota’s largest women-owned businesses, for $2.9 million, said Brad Parker, a partner and broker at TLG Real Estate, who partnered with Ghazvini Development on the sale.

While developers seem excited, some residents are less than thrilled as they’ve fought against the commercial development, which will overtake one of the last Thomasville Road retail frontage sites available in Tallahassee.

Many of those same residents took to the comment section and didn’t hold back in sharing their disappointment and frustration.

“Chicken, mattresses and a vape shop?,” wrote one perso. It’s become a joke, seeded in deep frustration for locals, in labeling these types of retail locations as they’ve begun to pop up more and more frequently. In a hint to what may not be coming, Ghazvini responded with a laughing emoji and wrote “nope!”

“It’s all about the green just not tree type of course,” wrote another critic.

As the land is cleared, homes in the St. Ives and Mint Hill neighborhoods that once had a barrier of trees in front of Thomasville Road now have a view of the busy thoroughfare.

Ghazvini addressed that when asked in the comment section: “The land development code requires a buffer when commercial and residential back up to each other, and in the locations within the project where this is true we will absolutely be following the code”

Amid the pushback, the Ghazvini Development page is encouraging those who wish to lease or keep tabs on the work by following them and reaching out to Premier Commercial Group.
