HIALEAH, Fla. — Miami-Dade Animal Services has opened an investigation into a dog attack that occurred on the Fourth of July, Hialeah police confirmed Monday.
According to Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, the incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of West 50th Place.
Rodriguez said a worker arrived at a home in the area and a dog ran out the front door before attacking a smaller dog that was being walked nearby by its owner.
According to Rodriguez, the owner of the larger dog went outside, separated the dogs and took his dog back inside his home.
But Rodriguez said the dog escaped again just moments later and ran back toward the smaller dog, which was being helped by a neighbor.
“As the neighbor tried to run away with the smaller dog to prevent another attack, he fell and sustained injuries,” Rodriguez said in an email to Local 10 News.
A relative of the smaller dog’s owner told Local 10 News that the dog was killed in the attack.
Rodriguez confirmed that Hialeah police contacted Miami-Dade Animal Services, which has taken over the investigation.
