It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Chester Daniel (Danny) Sweatland, 85, who passed away in Jacksonville on June 29, 2026. Born in Hartford, CT, on June 27, 1941, Danny was the eldest of six sons born to Robert (Sonny) Sweatland and Catherine Holcomb.
A patriot and proud veteran of the United States Army, Danny moved to Green Cove Springs in 1978. He worked for several car dealerships before joining Clay County Maintenance.
He was a gifted mechanic, a valued member of the Elks Club, and was always ready to lend a hand on any project. Above all, Danny was a kind, gentle, and hard-working man devoted to his family and his faith. He was a member of Trinity Community Church and was beloved by all who knew him.
Danny is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Gale Delano Sweatland; his three sons, Michael, Robert, and Kenneth (Shari); four granddaughters, Casey Starvish, Jessica Sweatland, Sara McCurdy (Matthew), and Bobbie-Leigh Viens (Brandon); and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his five brothers, Andrew Wayne (Carol), Robert Jr. (Rose), Gordon (Nancy), Dale, and Terry, along with many relatives across the country. He was predeceased by his step-brother, Howard Gibson, and his granddaughter, Carrie Ann McVay Sweatland.
The family will hold a joint Celebration of Life for Danny and his brother, Howie, on Saturday, August 1st, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Trinity Community Church Fellowship Hall (6865 Pine Avenue, Fleming Island, FL 32003).
