Fort Myers Police Department will increase enforcement and public education efforts to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The department received a $27,374.99 state grant, accepted by Fort Myers City Council on Nov. 3, to support the initiative through May 8, 2026.

The Florida Department of Transportation and the Institute of Police Technology and Management awarded the grant, which funds participation in the High Visibility Enforcement for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program. Officers in the program will complete a four-hour training course.

The goal is to reduce crashes that cause serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists by increasing awareness and compliance with traffic laws and addressing behaviors such as speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving.

The Institute of Police Technology and Management identified eight Fort Myers locations where enforcement and education efforts will be concentrated.Â
