The City of Hialeah on Monday launched a pilot program that uses smart water meters in homes and business.
The plan would install between 175 and 225 ultrasonic meters at no cost to the city to measure water consumption more accurately and detect leaks.
“You guys have been complaining,” Calvo said on Monday. “I’ve heard your concerns. We’re making sure that our bills are gonna be accurate here in Hialeah so that everybody’s paying only for the water that you’re consuming.”
The pilot program is expected to run for 180 days as the city evaluates whether to expand the smart water system.
For years, water service has been one of the biggest concerns for Hialeah residents, marked by high bills, imprecise meter readings, and constant complaints about the system.
The dissatisfaction even reached the political arena and became a campaign issue, and one of the main promises made by now-Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo. In January, he signed an executive order for an audit of the Department of Public Works/Water and Sewer Services.
