CASSELBERRY, Fla. — A crash in Casselberry killed two people and one other person was sent to the hospital for treatment on Tuesday, according to law enforcement.
The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened after a suspected drug trafficker tried speeding away from law enforcement.
The southbound lanes of Highway 17-92 near the intersection of Sunnytown Road were closed for several hours after the crash.
People who live and work nearby said they heard a terrible boom noise right around noon on Tuesday.
It all started about nine miles up the road near State Road 417, when law enforcement tried to pull over a suspected fentanyl trafficker, and instead the driver took off heading south on Highway 17-92, reaching speeds at times more than 100 miles per hour, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies did not chase the car out of concern for the public, they stated, but did keep an eye on the suspect through their aviation unit.
While heading south on Highway 17-92, the suspect’s car hit another car near Sunnytown Road, same both people in that car died. The suspect was taken into custody and to the hospital for treatment.
Casselberry Police Department is investigating the crash as a traffic homicide.
