ST. MARYS, Kan. (WIBW) – A Pottawatomie County city will be looking for a new police chief after its present top cop moves back to Florida to continue his law enforcement career.
In a Facebook post this week, current St. Marys Police Chief Derek Cid said he would conclude his service in the Pottawatomie County city of 2,759 residents later this month before his resignation takes effect.
“After much thought, prayer, and consideration, I am pleased to share that I am returning to Florida law enforcement and will transition from my role as Chief of Police at the Saint Marys Police Department,” Cid stated in his message on the St. Marys Police and Fire Department Facebook page. “This move will allow my family and me to return to Florida as we begin our next chapter.”

Cid noted that his final week serving the Saint Marys community will be July 20, 2026.
“To ensure a smooth transition, Captain Lisa Davis will serve as Interim Chief of Police, overseeing departmental operations and administrative responsibilities,” Cid stated in the Facebook post. “Serving as Chief of Police for the City of Saint Marys has been one of the greatest honors of my career. I want to sincerely thank the many law enforcement professionals, first responders, prosecutors, judges, public officials, community partners, and friends I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my nearly 15 years in Kansas law enforcement.
“I am truly grateful for the support, partnerships, and friendships built along the way. The relationships and memories made here are something my family and I will always value and carry with us.”
A come-and-go farewell reception for Cid will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at the St. Marys City Commission Room,.200 S. 7th St. in St. Marys.
“I would truly enjoy the opportunity to visit, share memories, and personally thank those who have been part of this journey,” Cid stated in the post. “Thank you again for your friendship, support, and trust. I wish each of you continued success and safety in the years ahead!”
Wabaunsee County Sheriff Eric Kirsch commented on Cid’s announcement on the Facebook page, stating, “My & our highest honor and respect for everything you’ve done for your team, family & community. Honored to call you my friend Cid.”
