A man was taken into custody after authorities say he set a portion of a Hollywood home on fire and then refused to leave the residence early Wednesday.
It was around 4:02 a.m. when Hollywood Fire Rescue responded to the home in the 5200 block of Wiley Street for a report of a residential fire.
Once there, fire crews learned that “a portion of the home had been intentionally set on fire” by a man in his 40s with “severe mental illness,” Hollywood Fire Rescue said.
The man refused to leave the home, prompting “an extended standoff” with law enforcement.
Meanwhile, firefighters fought the fire from outside until the man could be taken into custody without incident.
The home, which had previously been condemed, sustained extensive fire damage, officials said.
Police took the man to the hospital, but did not elaborate on his condition or what charges he might face.
The investigation continues.
