Hialeah, FL – Hialeah has started a pilot program that will test smart water meters designed to improve billing accuracy and identify water leaks more quickly for residents and businesses throughout the city.
City officials said the program will install between 175 and 225 ultrasonic smart water meters at selected residential and commercial properties.
The new technology is intended to provide more precise water consumption readings than traditional meters while allowing the city to identify leaks and other system issues earlier.
The pilot project is expected to run for approximately six months.
During that time, city staff will evaluate the performance, accuracy and reliability of the meters before deciding whether to expand the technology to more customers across Hialeah.
The initiative follows ongoing concerns from residents who have questioned the accuracy of water bills and meter readings in recent years.
City leaders said the pilot is part of a broader effort to improve public confidence in the water billing system and provide customers with more dependable information about their water usage.
Earlier this year, Mayor Bryan Calvo ordered a review of the city’s Department of Public Works and Water and Sewer Services, including an audit of billing practices and operations.
Officials said the smart meter pilot is another step in evaluating potential improvements to the city’s water infrastructure.
If the program is successful, the technology could eventually be deployed more widely throughout Hialeah.
In addition to improving billing accuracy, city officials said the meters could help detect leaks sooner, reduce water loss and give customers better insight into their daily water consumption.
