PORT CHARLOTTE — The Department of Health is hosting its fourth annual Back to School Bash on Saturday to offer students free hearing and vision screenings, haircuts, bike helmets and bike safety demonstrations.
Public Information Officer Omar Rodríguez Ortiz said the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office will host a bike rodeo and offer helmet fittings.
“Kids will be able to ride bikes that the office will lend them,” Ortiz said. “They will learn about bike safety as they have fun riding.”
About 25 organizations are partnering with the DOH for the event. The Boys & Girls Clubs and Charlotte County Libraries and Histories will have trailers outdoors. There will also be a separate mobile library trailer.
Health screenings will take place inside the DOH building.
“Our partner organization detects any anomalies, and they make the appropriate referrals so that kids can have a successful start to the new school year,” Ortiz said.

The health screenings provided at the event are limited to vision and hearing. Families interested in dental, sport physicals, Women, Infants and Children and other services can call the DOH or visit the building during regular agency hours to schedule an appointment.
Ortiz said families are encouraged to bring their own water bottles and put on sunscreen for the event. The DOH building only provides water fountains.
The Back to School Bash is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 1100 Loveland Blvd. Port Charlotte.
