One of the Miami Marlins’ promising rookies has been sidelined through at least the All-Star Break right as he was hitting his stride.
The Marlins on Thursday placed outfielder Owen Caissie on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain that forced him out of their game against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday after just one inning in the field. The team recalled outfielder Rece Hinds from Triple A Jacksonville to fill his roster spot.
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said postgame Wednesday that Caissie had initially felt the tightness on Tuesday but went through pregame work on Wednesday with no issue. He was slated for additional testing on Thursday, which showed enough for the Marlins to sideline him.
Caissie, who was acquired this offseason in the trade that sent right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs, is hitting .239 with a .756 on-base-plus-slugging mark, 12 home runs, 50 RBI and 30 runs in 80 games this season.
However, seven of those 12 home runs have come since June 10, a 22-game stretch in which he is hitting .300 with a 1.038 OPS and 20 RBI.
In other roster moves, left-handed relief pitcher John King is on the 15-day injured list with a left lateral ankle sprain.
Meanwhile, Miami activated right-handed pitcher Janson Junk from the injured list, recalled Ryan Gusto from Triple A Jacksonville and optioned right-handed pitcher Zach Brzykcy to Triple A Jacksonville.
Junk will start Miami’s series finale against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.
